Cancer is the result of abnormal cell growth in the body. Cancer cells grow, divide, and spread from one organ to another very quickly. It is one of the deadliest diseases in the world. Although scientists are continuously finding more effective and quicker ways to cure it, number of cancer deaths has still been rising steadily over the years by the rate of 17% since the year 2010.

There are many solutions to treating cancer such as radiation and chemotherapy. However, these are very expensive approaches. There are high risks of side effects too including chances of developing hearing loss. Because of this, many online articles have sprung, suggesting cheaper ways to help people fight the onslaught of cancer. One of these is the use of lemons.

Indeed, lemons are way cheaper. It is much more accessible than other treatments too. But is it true? Can lemons cure cancer or even prevent cancer before it starts? Continue reading below to find out.

Lemons

Lemons are one of the most versatile ingredients out there. It is infused with a lot of Vitamin C, which the human body uses in many different ways such as formation of collagen, making of skin, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels, maintenance of cartilage, bones teeth, as well as healing of wounds.

Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP)

This carbohydrate is found in the peels of citrus fruits. It is modified to be absorbed into the intestinal tract to make consumption much easier. According to studies made in animals, MCP can prevent the spread of prostate, breast, and skin cancer to other organs by making it difficult for the cancer cells to divide and spread. However, no findings were found regarding the initial tumour.

Limonoids

These are chemicals that are also found in citrus peels. This is what causes the bitter taste in lemons. According to research, high dosage of this can slow down the growth of cancer cells and can even cause them to die. Again, however, this were only tested on animals. Although it was tested on breast cancer cells, these were removed from the body and studied in a laboratory.

Vitamin C

This antioxidant serves as a support to immune system functions by protecting our cells from free radicals. Free radicals are charged atoms that react to the cell membrane and the DNA within the cells, which impairs their functioning. Damage caused by free radicals play a big role in developing cancer. That’s why it is important to protect our bodies by making sure we get enough of vitamin C.

The Bottomline?

Although very beneficial and healthy to the human body, there is not much studies and research that can guarantee the effectiveness of lemons as a cure for cancer 100%. It may help slow down the development of cancer cells, but that’s as far as it can go. Still, the best thing to do is consult with medical professionals for medically-approved cancer treatments.
